1964 Grand National – Team Spirit

The race was run on 21st March 1964. There were 33 runners.

Perhaps one of the lesser known Grand Nationals, the 1964 renewal was won by 12 year old Team Spirit, at odds of 18/1. The winner carried 10 stone 3 pounds. The horse was ridden by Willie Robinson and trained by Fulke Walwyn. It also featured 1963 Grand National winner, Ayala.

This was also a tragic race in that jockey Paddy Farrell fell from his mount, Border Flight at The Chair and broke his back. His accident led to the formation of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

Seen here is the 1964 Grand National race card or programme. Perhaps not the most memorable of renewals, at more than fifty years old this race card still has a fair degree of rarity and is sought after. In sound condition, a copy is likely to achieve a good price.
